Wasaga Beach Church Opens Free Store-Like Clothing Depot

A Simcoe Muskoka congregation hopes to bring a sense of warmth to those in need in the area.

Clearview Community Church has four locations in central Ontario offering free clothing, including one in Wasaga Beach.

The church designed its workspace to look like a store so that people have the option of choosing clothes as they would in a clothing store. The clothing depot offers everything from jeans, coats, hats to winter boots.

“There is a need. It looks like a store, but without a cash register,” said Lawrence Crews, pastor of Clearview Community Church’s Wasaga campus. “When people come here, they can act like they’re going to a store but they don’t have to pay anything.”

Crews said he knew the importance of this clothing depot after talking to many people in the community.

“Talking to people and listening — we know some people go through tough times. We wanted to do something about that,” Crews said.

“We see, as in any city, that there are people who find themselves in need. What we want to do is meet the need and, in this case, put them in good clothes on the back.”

Eager to help, Crews said he couldn’t wait to join the long list of area churches that are giving back.

“We haven’t got it all figured out, but we weren’t going to sit there idly. We’re literally opening our doors saying, ‘If we can help you, we’d be delighted,'” Crews said.

He said none of this would be possible without the support of the community.

“I’m not surprised because I got to know these people whose hearts are so full of generosity,” Crews said. “But whenever I feel their generosity, I’m always blown away.”

The Clearview Community Church is located at 800 Sunnidale Road in Wasaga Beach. The clothing depot is open the first and third Thursday of each month at 4 p.m.
