One city in Ontario decided it had had enough of the “hate” and “misinformation” and banned comments on all of its social media channels.

As of October 26, the Town of Wasaga Beach no longer allows comments on social media platforms.

“We are making this change because of the individuals in our community who use the pages to intimidate, spread hate and misinformation,” the city posted.

In a video posted on the city’s social media, Mayor Nina Bifolichi, explained that the city has known not only opposing opinions, but also lies.

She says staff members prepare content for the city’s webpage and social media pages and monitor comments to make sure they follow the rules for posting.

“Unfortunately, a small handful of people in our community are using the city’s social media platform to spread their hateful lies and bullying behavior,” Bifolichi said in the video.

She says the group claims to be censored.

“Toxic people love to play victim,” she says. “They twist facts to meet their needs and narcissistic ways keep staff busy monitoring the city’s social media platform, depriving them of other productive activities.”

They have therefore decided to deactivate the possibility of commenting, for the moment, on publications on social networks.

She adds that commentators don’t just have a difference of opinion or a point of view opposed to cities.

“It’s not about the city trying to control the narrative,” she said. “These are a small handful of people who spread lies, twist the facts, harass and play the victim when called upon to do so.”

The public is encouraged to email or phone the city with any comments or suggestions at this time.

At least one group in town is not happy with the advice. The Wasaga Beach Taxpayers Association is organize a demonstration this Friday.

But the city does not give in.

“At the small group, you will not be given a forum to voice your hatred and lies to those who have followed the city’s social media rules and shared your views in a respectful manner, even when it comes to an opposite point of view, ”says the mayor.
