Severn Township man killed in tragic water pipe incident



A boating incident on Lake Temagami ended in tragedy.

The Ontario Provincial Police have confirmed that they recovered the body of Douglas Coppin, 35, of Severn Township on July 15.

On July 14, 2021, shortly after 2:30 p.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Temiskaming Detachment, Temiskaming OPP Marine Unit, Crime Enforcement Unit OPP Temiskaming, OPP Aviation and Helicopter Services Section, OPP Traffic Incident Law Enforcement Management Team (TIME) , Bear Island First Nation Police and Nipissing Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a missing person on Lake Temagami.

The Ontario Provincial Police say their investigation found boating activity was underway when a water tube spilled.

“The individual on the tube was thrown into the water and could not be located,” the OPP said in a statement.

The Ontario Provincial Police’s Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) continued the search on July 15 and located the deceased.

The investigation continues under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS).

The Ontario Provincial Police remind all operators and passengers to carry an approved lifesaving device in your boat or pleasure craft for everyone on board.

They suggest that you find one that looks good on you and wear it every time you go out on a boat or pleasure craft.
