Open letter from Canadian businesses to our elected officials

Sault Ste. Mary – February 11, 2022 – The Sault Ste. The Marie Chamber of Commerce is deeply concerned about the recent closures and blockages at Canada/US Ports of Entry. The lockdowns are raising serious concerns about a halt in economic activity and further supply chain disruptions.

Earlier this week, business associations (including the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce) on both sides of the border called for an immediate lifting of the blockade and the speedy reopening of the Ambassador Bridge. The group also urged federal, provincial, state and local governments to work collaboratively to provide quick solutions to illegal traffic blockages at county points.

Canada’s border crossings are essential enablers of the Canadian and American economies and are essential to ensuring that the supply of food, medical products and industrial goods can continue. They are essential to the well-being of all Canadians and the companies that employ them.

As our economies emerge from the effects of the pandemic, we must not allow any group to undermine cross-border trade that supports families on both sides of the border.

Today, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce issued the following open letter and recommendations to elected officials across Canada.

February 11, 2022

Canadian businesses have suffered under the pressure of constant disruption over the past two years. Challenges they have had to overcome include COVID-19, extreme weather events, growing inflationary pressures, labor shortages and supply chain disruptions. Today, the success of the recovery is threatened by the continued blockages of critical infrastructure that supports the livelihoods and well-being of all Canadians.

The damage is both immediate and serious. Every hour that these lockdowns continue causes greater damage to our economy and our society. Manufacturers reliant on just-in-time delivery have been forced to cancel shifts for thousands of workers, livestock and fresh produce shipments face serious delays or waste that threatens food safety, and deliveries of much-needed products to Canadian families are being cancelled. These restrictions will only grow in scope and impact if the blockades continue.

Allowing these illegal closures to continue will also have serious economic and reputational consequences for years to come. Blockades not only violate the rule of law that protects our rights and freedoms, but also undermine Canada’s international reputation. We are already hearing calls to move investment, contracts and production from Canada due to our inability to guarantee rapid delivery to international customers.

Canadians expect our elected representatives at all levels of government and from all political parties to set aside partisanship and jurisdictional disputes to quickly resolve this problem.

Our organizations ask our elected officials to take the following measures quickly.

  • Provide a strong and unified commitment from the Prime Minister, Premiers, Opposition Party Leaders and Mayors that the rule of law will be upheld.
  • Urgently adopt measures to protect critical infrastructure to prevent further closures elsewhere in the country in the coming days.
  • Seek immediate injunctive action through the courts to affirm a clear message that lawlessness will not be tolerated.
  • Ensure that law enforcement agencies have all the necessary political support and appropriate tools needed to restore public order and remove any physical blockade that is not voluntarily dismantled.

Along with the vast majority of Canadians, Canada’s business community looks to you to restore the rule of law and successfully end these illegal actions that harm our economy and the well-being of our citizens. As order is restored, we pledge to do our best to restore much-needed jobs, goods and services to our fellow citizens.
