Margaret Lalonde named Elder of the Year

The Town of Wasaga Beach and its Age-Friendly Community Advisory Committee are pleased to present the 2022 Senior of the Year award to longtime resident Margaret Lalonde, in recognition of significant volunteer contributions over the past eight years.

“On behalf of City Council and staff, I extend my sincere congratulations to Margaret on receiving this award and thank her for her very generous efforts,” said Mayor Nina Bifolchi.

Fiona Ryner, chair of the age-friendly community advisory committee, also congratulated Lalonde.

“Volunteers are the backbone of our community and we are proud to recognize such remarkable people like Margaret every year,” said Ryner.

Lalonde’s tireless efforts at the Georgian Good Food Box have helped provide hundreds of boxes of fresh produce to people looking for ways to stretch their food budget. She can be counted on to always show up ready and willing to help and take on all necessary tasks, including picking up food, unloading product deliveries, packing and distributing boxes of food. In advance, she confirms that there will be enough supplies and a team on hand to work alongside her on these tasks. Lalonde also delivered boxes when needed, helped with cleaning, and even did banking and more.

Her kindness and support to Campbell House Hospice has been invaluable to individuals and families during such a difficult time. From providing snacks in the kitchen to providing compassion, empathy and warm, friendly companionship to individuals and families, she provided invaluable comfort and support. Lalonde has continued to help during COVID, in roles allowed under the restrictions. A model for others, her experience qualifies her as a reference person for new recruits, guiding them with pleasure towards their roles and offering them ongoing support.

Lalonde is an inspiration to others, including her family, involving her children and grandchildren in activities to support the Food Box. Her kindness, selflessness and generosity of her time qualify her as a very deserving recipient of our Elder of the Year award.
