In the absence of facts, rumor and speculation flourish like kudzu along the highways of Dixie.

The OPP has a reputation for putting on a chintzy buffet even when asking for the public’s help. They offer the bare minimum.

The cops will call it withholding evidence, and sometimes that’s right. Other times they cite the integrity of the investigation. This too is right – up to a point.

But the more information the public has, the more useful this underutilized resource will be.

In the case of the Wasaga Beach abduction of 37-year-old Elnaz Tamiri (aka Hajtamiri), the victim remains an enigma shrouded in enigma. Replenishing the strands of one’s life is not for the faint of heart.

Det. Insp. Matt Watson told the Toronto Sun Thursday: “Unfortunately, I cannot go into investigative theories or evidence at this time.”

Messages to Facebook friends hit a brick wall. Some facts, however, can be gleaned from his own Facebook page and comments from friends.

What we do know is that three armed black men – in police gear – nabbed her at her parents’ home in Trailwood Place on January 12. They said they were there to arrest Tamiri. They reportedly fled with the victim in a Lexus RX.

There has been no ransom demand, no demand from the kidnappers, no indication even of what it is.

A friend alluded to the Iranian immigrant (she arrived in Canada about five years ago) having a tragic and troubled past.

She had apparently moved to Wasaga Beach a short time ago from Richmond Hill, where she has family. Tamiri was unmarried, had no children.

Cops say she had no criminal record and there don’t appear to be any criminal associations in her past or in her family.

But make no mistake, Elnaz Tamiri was the target and whoever ordered her caught wanted her taken alive.

We apologize, but this video failed to load.

And that’s all. Just a platter of chunks and bites. These rumors and speculations? They become the main course.

Was she caught for personal reasons? A jealous ex-boyfriend carrying a twisted torch? Medications? Gambling? Or was it political, something ugly from the old country rearing its head here?

And why Wasaga Beach? Was it hidden?

We just don’t know.

A Wasaga resident wrote on a local forum that neighbors allegedly told cops that a “very suspicious” bearded man was watching the house where Tamiri lived. His white car with covered license plates made several laps of Trailwood Place and it was duly flagged.

It is unclear whether or not the cops acted on this tip.

On his Facebook page, Elnaz Tamiri makes several references to the mass murder of those on board Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 in January 2020. The airliner was shot down by Iranian Revolutionary Guard fanatics near Tehran .

Everyone on board was killed, 176 in all – men, women, children. Among the dead were 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents.

Prior to that tragic day, there are a number of photos of Tamiri with a man. They are in Malaysia, China, every point in between. They look happy.

There is a final photo of the couple from January 11, 2020 – three days after the accident. Superimposed on the photo is “PS752”.

Does this tragedy have anything to do with Tamiri’s kidnapping? Nobody says.

In fact, no one says much.

Elnaz Hajtamiri is described as slim, 5ft 3in, with shoulder length black hair.

The Ontario Provincial Police has set up a dedicated tip line at 1-833-728-3415 for the public to provide information. On social networks, use the hashtag “BringElnazHome”.
