Gold Coast Pride Festival returns to Surfers Paradise beach

Stage legend Carlotta crowned a fierce Queensland drag queen on Fair Day of the Gold Coast Pride Festival in Surfers Paradise.

The burgeoning festival started last year on Queensland’s Gold Coast. And on Saturday June 4, he returned with an even bigger crowd taking part in Australia’s only Beach Pride Parade.

Walkers traveled along Main Beach to the Macintosh Bridge in Macintosh Island Park. Punters gathered in the park for the Gold Coast Pride Festival Fair Day, hosted by drag MC Carmen Taykett.

Among the entertainment was a range of drag divas who took part in the Miss Gold Coast Pride Drag Queen Pageant.

Queensland drag performers Helen Wheels, Miss Dee, Tia Maria and Liz Anya all took part, with drag queen Justine Deeva ultimately winning the title of Miss Gold Coast Pride 2022.

Among the pageant judges were cabaret legend and entertainment icon Carlotta, who took the stage to crown Justine the winner, and Helen Wheels Miss Congeniality.

Carlotta announced her retirement last year after an incredible 58-year career in entertainment and now lives on the coast.

“I’m so glad they sent the retirement bus to get me out of the old house for this,” Carlotta laughed.

“I think it’s been a wonderful afternoon here. I think it’s just fabulous that everyone has come here to represent Gold Coast pride.

Carlotta also encouraged everyone to make the pilgrimage to Sydney for the WorldPride mega-festival next year. She said she was joining the 17-day celebration with an art exhibition in Sydney.

“I took pictures of these fabulous drag queens today and I’m going to paint a few of them to put in the exhibit,” she explained.

However, ahead of WorldPride, an upcoming stage show also lured Carlotta out of retirement.

Priscilla musical comedy is coming to The Star Gold Coast from July 16, presented by Matt Ward,” she said.

“They brought me out of retirement to play a guest role there and it’s going to be fabulous, the most wonderful of events.”

The Gold Coast Pride Festival continues throughout Pride Month

Gold Coast Pride Festival organizers Vince Siciliani and Danni Zuvela said they were delighted with the participation in Fair Day.

Siciliani said everyone is also welcome at the other festival events during Gold Coast Pride Month in June.

“Next weekend we will have our big tennis open day at the Pizzey Park Tennis Academy. We have multiple pitches for everyone to come and have a shot, with food and a bar available,” he said.

“Then the following weekend (June 18) we are having the Teddy Bears Picnic, a rainbow picnic for families and everyone at HOTA in Surfers Paradise.”
