Former Wasaga Beach mayor honored with fundraiser

Former Wasaga Beach Mayor Cal Patterson is honored by Canadians’ favorite pastime.

The Living Wish Foundation hosts the first Cal Patterson Memorial Hockey Tournament at Central Park Arena in Collingwood, Ontario. April 1 and 2.

The tournament features 12 women’s hockey teams. All players are over 30 years old.

“We’re really excited. We’ve been planning this tournament since 2019 as a fundraiser for our charity,” said Living Wish Foundation co-founder Dr. Alyssa Boyd.

“We started planning this fundraiser with one of our board members, Cal Patterson, but unfortunately it was canceled due to COVID.”

Following Patterson’s passing in August 2021, Boyd thought it would be a good idea to make this a memorial tournament in his honor.

“It’s something he’s passionate about and something he wanted to see happen,” Boyd said. “We are thrilled to be able to honor Cal and move forward with this tournament.”

Boyd said there are no monetary goals this year, but as the tournament grows that will change.

“The goal of this year’s tournament is to make it a success, to honor Cal and formally acknowledge his death because we missed that opportunity due to COVID,” Boyd said.

“We want people to come out, we want teams to have a really good time and when we know it’s a success and we work out our issues, in a few years we’ll have higher monetary targets.”

All funds raised this year and in the future are donated to the Living Wish Foundation, which grants the final wishes of those in their last year of life.

The goal is to eventually host the Cal Patterson Memorial Hockey Tournament in Wasaga Beach when the two-pad arena complex is completed.

More information about the tournament can be found on the Living Wish Foundation website.
