‘I want to thank everyone for voting for me, standing up and helping out,’ says new Collingwood/Wasaga Beach Board Trustee

Public and Catholic school boards in Simcoe County will have a new school trustee representing Collingwood this term.

Five candidates were vying for the position of Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Trustee representing Zone 6: Collingwood and Wasaga Beach.

The October 24 election results decided Mike Foley as the winner with 7,774 votes from Collingwood and Wasaga Beach residents. The finalists were Barbara-Anne Smith (3,789 votes), Audrey Stukas (1,427), Bob Lima (775) and Al Halimic (765).

“I feel damn good. I got about 54 percent of the overall vote, so it’s pretty important to what people want and what they expect,” Foley said. “They recognized that I had experience and had done it before.”

Foley served as a school trustee on the Upper Grand School Board beginning in 2018.

“I met so many people knocking on doors. I want to thank everyone for voting for me, standing up and helping out. It was really wonderful,” he said.

During the election campaign, Foley noted a difference in priorities between Collingwood and Wasaga Beach residents, and hopes to represent the concerns of both municipalities at the SCDSB table.

“Everyone in Wasaga Beach wants a quality high school. In Collingwood, people want to be connected. They want some transparency,” Foley said. “I want to be able to really represent them and work on their behalf.”

Looking back on his time on the campaign trail, Foley said he would like to see all all-candidates meetings held in Collingwood and Wasaga Beach in the future to also include candidates for school trustees, because this time- here they were not allowed. to participate. While he acknowledges that all-candidates meetings have generally not included director candidates, it might be time to make a change.

“It was a bit shocking. The budget we manage is almost three-quarters of a billion dollars,” he said. “There is so much more oversight required for that kind of budget and our strengths most precious – our children; the leaders of tomorrow.
