25 new cases of COVID in Simcoe-Muskoka on Friday

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 25 new cases of COVID-19 in its latest update released on September 17.

The new cases include 22 unvaccinated people, two partially vaccinated people and one fully vaccinated person.

There is a school outbreak in the area declared at Fieldcrest Primary School in Bradford. There are two cases at school. The health unit declares an outbreak at school when there is evidence of person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 at school.

The school is still open, but the affected cohort (s) have been ordered to self-isolate.

The new cases reported today are as follows:

  • Wasaga Beach (1): A young person under the age of 18 whose case is linked to close contact transmission.
  • Clear view (2): A young person under the age of 18 and a person between the ages of 18 and 34. The two cases are still under investigation.
  • Barrie (4): Three people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. Two cases are linked to close contacts and the other two are still under investigation.
  • Bradford (2): A young person under the age of 18 and a person between the ages of 45 and 64. One case is listed as community-based (no known link) and another is linked to close contact transmission.
  • Oro-Medonte (1): A young person under the age of 18 whose case is linked to close contact.
  • Midland (2): A person between 18 and 34 years old and a person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is listed as community acquired (no known link) and the other is linked to close contact transmission.
  • Severn (2): Two people between 45 and 64 years old. One case is listed as community-based (no known link) and the other is linked to close contact transmission.
  • Essa (2): Two people between 45 and 64 years old. One case is listed as community-based (no known link) and the other is linked to an outbreak.
  • New Tecumseth (7): Four young people under the age of 18, one person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact transmission and the other six cases are still under investigation.
  • Muskoka District (2): There is a new case in Gravenhurst and a new case in Huntsville.

There are currently 240 active cases in the region.

Thirteen people in Simcoe County are hospitalized with COVID-19.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 13,299 cases of COVID-19, of which 12,802 have been cured and 257 cases have resulted in death.

The health unit confirmed that 5,825 of the area’s cases were variant strains. There are 181 still active laboratory-confirmed variant cases.

The breakdown of case variants includes:

4,007 alpha cases,
168 gamma cases,
34 beta cases,
955 delta cases,
and 661 cases have tested positive and are awaiting further testing.

According to the health unit, 76.9 percent of the population aged 12 and over living in Simcoe-Muskoka received both doses of the vaccine and 83.7 percent received at least one dose of a vaccine.

Approximately 26.5% of the total population of Simcoe-Muskoka (including children) is not vaccinated and 67.6% is fully vaccinated.

Anyone born in or before 2009 and living in the Simcoe-Muskoka region can book their first or second dose of vaccine online through the Ontario Vaccine Reservation System. More appointments are added regularly for clinics in the region.

The health unit sometimes withdraws a case or moves it based on further investigation of the whereabouts data. The graph below reflects the updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on September 17.
