19 new cases reported in Simcoe-Muskoka on Friday

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 19 new cases of COVID-19 and zero deaths today for the August 13 update.

This week, the health unit confirmed 69 new cases, up from 37 cases last week and 28 cases the week of July 25.

No COVID-related deaths were reported in Simcoe-Muskoka in August.

New cases reported today include:

  • Wasaga Beach (1): A person between 35 and 44 years old whose case is still under investigation.
  • Barrie (5): One young person under 18, three people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Four cases are linked to close contact transmission and the other case is still under investigation.
  • Spring water (1): A person between 35 and 44 years old whose case is linked to close contact transmission.
  • Innisfil (2): Two people between 45 and 64 years old. Both cases are linked to close contact transmission.
  • Bradford (1): A young person under the age of 18 whose transmission of the case is still under investigation.
  • Midland (2): Two people between 18 and 34 years old. The source of transmission for one case is listed as community acquired (no known link) and the other is from close contact.
  • Oro-Medonte (2): A person between 18 and 34 years old and a person between 45 and 64 years old. Both cases are linked to an epidemic.
  • Severn (1): A person between 45 and 64 years of age whose transmission of the case is linked to close contact.
  • Essa (3): A young person under the age of 18, a person between the ages of 18 and 34 and a person between the ages of 45 and 64. One case is linked to close contact, another is still under investigation and another is listed as community acquired (no link known).
  • Muskoka Lakes (1): A young person under the age of 18 whose case is still under investigation.

There are currently 93 active cases in the region.

There are two active outbreaks, each with two cases each. One outbreak occurred at a recreational camp in Muskoka and the other at a food and beverage service establishment in Simcoe County.

Two people in Simcoe County are hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes a new hospitalization this week.

The health unit confirmed that 5,127 of the area’s cases were variant strains. There are 53 still active laboratory-confirmed variant cases.

The breakdown of case variants includes:

  • 4000 alpha cases,
  • 168 gamma cases,
  • 34 beta cases,
  • 249 delta cases,
  • and 677 cases have tested positive and are awaiting further testing.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,484 cases of COVID-19, of which 12,136 have been cured and 255 cases have resulted in death.

According to the health unit, 70 percent of the population aged 12 and over living in Simcoe-Muskoka received both doses of the vaccine and 10 percent received their first dose of the vaccine. The remaining 20 percent are not vaccinated.

About 30 percent of the total population of Simcoe-Muskoka (including children) are unvaccinated and 61 percent are fully immunized.

Anyone 12 years of age or older living in the Simcoe-Muskoka area can book their first or second dose of vaccine online through the Ontario Vaccine Reservation System. Other appointments are added regularly for clinics in the region.

The health unit sometimes withdraws a case or moves it based on further investigation of the whereabouts data. The graph below reflects the updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on August 13.
