1,709 new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka since Christmas Eve

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reports 1,709 new cases of COVID-19 and one death in its latest update released Dec. 29, which is the first update since Dec. 24.

A 79-year-old man from Midland died on December 23 after contracting COVID-19.

The new cases reported today include 326 unvaccinated, 80 partially vaccinated and 735 fully vaccinated people.

There are 3,092 active cases in the region.

Twenty-six Simcoe-Muskoka residents are currently hospitalized with COVID-19.

Over the past eight weeks, 89 unvaccinated, nine partially vaccinated and 32 fully vaccinated people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka. All are over 12 years old.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 20,152 cases of COVID-19 with 16,773 of those cases recovered and 287 cases ending in death.

Just over 75% of the entire population of Simcoe-Muskoka has been fully immunized. Currently, 84% of the population aged five or older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine.

Due to the high number of cases reported to the health unit, the source of transmission is now listed as sporadic or outbreak related. There are 23 outbreak-related cases included in today’s report, and the rest are listed as “sporadic” cases.
