11 new COVID cases confirmed in Simcoe-Muskoka, one death

There are no new cases in Collingwood, Wasaga Beach or Clearview included in today’s update

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 11 new cases of COVID-19 and one death in its July 8 update.

A man from Ramara over 79 died on July 5 from contracting COVID-19. This is the first COVID-related death reported in the municipality.

Five of the new cases are residents of Simcoe County and six are from Muskoka.

There are 57 active cases in the region.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,316 cases of COVID-19, of which 11,585 have been cured and 252 cases have resulted in death.

There are 10 people in Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19-related illness.

The health unit has reported a total of 4,940 cases of variant strains, of which 26 are still active.

It may take several days to confirm a variant strain after a positive COVID-19 test result is reported to the health unit.

Today’s update also includes the following information on the variants of concern:

  • 3,996 local cases have tested positive for the worrying COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7 (alpha), up one since yesterday
  • 164 cases tested positive for the variant of concern P.1 (gamma), no increase
  • 33 cases have tested positive for the worrying variant B.1.351 (beta), up one from yesterday.
  • 73 cases have tested positive for the worrying variant B.1.617.2 (delta), up three since yesterday
  • 674 cases were tested positive (awaiting confirmation tests).

To date, 399,262 Simcoe-Muskoka residents (66% of the population) of the region have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccination, and 223,455 people (37% of the population) have received two doses.

According to the health unit, 45% of the region’s adult population (aged 18 and over) received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 32% received one dose. The remaining 24 percent are not vaccinated.

Anyone 12 years of age or older living in the Simcoe-Muskoka area can book their first or second dose of vaccine online through the Ontario Vaccine Reservation System. More appointments are added regularly for clinics in the region.

New cases reported today in Simcoe County and Muskoka District include (transmission of cases is being investigated unless otherwise noted).

  • Barrie (2): A young person under the age of 18 and a person between the ages of 18 and 34 whose case is listed as community (no known link).
  • Innisfil (1): A person between the ages of 18 and 34 whose case is linked to an epidemic.
  • Midland (1): A person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is listed as community (no known link).
  • Penetanguishene (1): A person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is listed as community (no known link). The case was confirmed on June 20 but had not been previously reported.
  • There are six new cases in Muskoka, including five in Bracebridge and one in Gravenhurst. All of the Bracebridge cases are in youth under the age of 18 whose cases have been linked to close contact transmission.

The health unit sometimes withdraws a case or moves it based on further investigation of the whereabouts data. The graph below reflects the updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on July 8).
